Reply with quote | #1 | Dr. Deaton, My husband had a vasectomy reversal in December. He had a semen analysis done in your office a few days ago and I am confused by what the results mean. They said he had a few dead sperm but not enough to get a count, no live sperm. What does it mean that he has dead sperm?? Is it possible for him to start producing live sperm?? The fact that there weren't enough to count?? Is it possible that he produce more?? I'm confused on what to do at this point.
Thanks, kdl |

Reply with quote | #2 | Thanks for your message. I have a semen analysis from 8/19/09 in front of me - I assume TL is your husband. You are correct. We centrifuged the specimen and only found a few dead sperm. This probably means the vasectomy reversal did not take, but if the reversal was recent then you should have him rechecked before any decisions are made. Sometimes the numbers are low just after the reversal and then they get better. If he stays this way, your only options would be IVF with ICSI or donor sperm. We would need another semen analysis in our office to determine if he would need a testicular biopsy before the IVF cycle or if there are enough good sperm in his ejaculated specimen to proceed.
Premier Fertility can offer assistance with either IVF-ICSI or donor sperm. We can also arrange the testicular biopsy if needed. Due to the complexity of this situation, you may want to make an appointment and do another semen analysis on the day of your new patient appointment. Kristy can coordinate this at 841-7070. Hope this helps. Blessings. __________________ Jeffrey L. Deaton, M.D.

His reversal was in December (8 months ago). That seems like if it hasn't worked by now, it isn't goign to work. What are our chances with a biopsy and IVF with ICSI?? |

Reply with quote | #4 | Yes - 8 months is enough time. If you have good egg quality, you would have a roughly 60% chance of success with a single try in our program. We would also need another sample from him before the cycle to see if we can find some motile sperm. If motile sperm is present, he would not need a testicular biopsy. However, in my opinion, he will probably need a pre-cycle biopsy. We could discuss all this at the new patient appointment. Hope this helps. __________________ Jeffrey L. Deaton, M.D.
